Yet the Mara\u00f1\u00f3n is at a crossroads. Planned dams and contamination threaten the river, while movements for long-term legal protection are gaining momentum. Recently, the Indigenous Kukama women\u2019s group Huaynakana Kamatahuara Kana won recognition of the Mara\u00f1\u00f3n as a subject of rights. Along the way, participants learned about the local species and from the communities that care for and depend on the Mara\u00f1\u00f3n. Each night brought a new breathtaking beach, where camp was set up and workshops on ecology and justice were held, with discussions continuing over dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camp concluded with a conference where participants presented newly developed river actions to<br>keep rivers healthy and free-flowing.
